A Challenge from RTKC Fund Development Director, Stacie Bratcher.
We are exactly one-week away from our annual Rebuilding Day BLITZ! Next Saturday, October 7, 400 volunteers will join together to make repairs to 25 homes across Clay County.
We are very excited about this event, but it got me to thinking…
How many of us take for granted our ability to make our own homes Safe & Healthy?
On any given day we might change a light bulb, plunge a toilet, tighten a screw, clean the lint trap, or pick up tripping hazards. Why? Because it’s important to keep our families safe and healthy.
Unfortunately, not all of our neighbors share this same ability. Rebuilding Together Kansas City envisions a safe and healthy home for every person. Will you help us accomplish this?
I challenge our staff members, our supporters – and YOU – to take the Safe & Healthy Home Challenge! Here’s how:
What: The Safe & Healthy Home Challenge
Who: Anyone who believes it is important to have a safe and healthy home
Where: Your own home
When: Oct 1-6, 2017
Record a fun, short video of yourself in continuous footage. First, announce your acceptance of the Safe & Healthy Home challenge, followed by performing a simple home repair, safety or maintenance task. Then nominate 2-3 other people to participate in the challenge.
Post your video to Facebook with the following text:
“We all have so much to do to keep our homes safe and healthy…what if you couldn’t? Who would you call on? Where would you turn? @RebuildingTogetherKC strives to eliminate unsafe and unhealthy living conditions for disadvantaged families. Because a Safe & Healthy Home is important to me, I’m donating to @RebuildingTogetherKC to transform the homes and lives of my neighbors in need. I challenge (insert friends names here) to do the same.”
Make a donation to RTKC to assist in improving the lives of your neighbors and loved ones by making their homes safe, warm, affordable, livable, and accessible. Your donation will make a world of difference. We promise you.
Thanks for joining us for the Safe & Healthy Home Challenge!
This Safe at Home tub modification recently completed for a KC Northland Senior converted a tub from an existing 18″ exterior step-over and 12″ interior step-over to an easy 8″ exterior step-over and 1″ interior step-over. What a huge improvement! No more black eyes caused by falls for this homeowner.
Benefits of RTKC tub cut-outs include:
Enables easy step access for bathing
Installation completed on existing tub
Extremely cost effective in comparison to tearing out existing tub
Optional tub cut-out model has removable door that locks in place to use as traditional tub
For more information on our Safe at Home safety modifications contact our office at Info@RebuildingTogetherKC.org.
Our Rebuilding Day House Selection Meeting was held on August 1st. At this meeting, Crew Leaders selected their house(s) for Rebuilding Day and 22 homes have been selected so far. We still have houses waiting to be added, so contact us at 816.781.8985 or info@RebuildingTogetherKC.org if you would like to transform the lives of a disadvantaged family. Rebuilding Day 2017 will be Saturday, October 7th!
We’ve kept ourselves busy helping a disabled veteran and his family in a TV-produced project called “Military Makeover“. It was an honor to transform the home of Zeke, a Purple Heart recipient who survived a helicopter accident in Afghanistan, and transform his home in just a week! We want to thank Kephart Lawn & Landscape for installing a gutter and french drain, Western Specialty Contractors for filling cracks in the foundation, High Definition Drywall LLC. for repairing the drywall, and numerous other volunteers who donated their time and skill set for this deserving family in our community!
The family appears in a three-part series airing on Lifetime at 6:30am on June 9, June 23 and July 7.
Watch the first episode and hear an incredible story of what this veteran has overcome. We haven’t seen footage of our Rebuilding Together volunteers yet, but checkout the screenshot below that we grabbed from the scrolling credits!

At Freedom House we feed the hungry, house the homeless, repair deplorable homes, give financial guidance, and provide utility assistance, hygiene kits, diapers, safety modifications and school supplies. We are able to advance our work because of our partnership with Freedom House and the ministries within its walls.
Here’s a spectacular video highlighting the work that has been done, and the organizations that have been positively impacted because of Freedom House!
We are filled with gratitude as we look back on our year. Here’s a recap of 2016 for Rebuilding Together Clay County!
We served 126 Families -a 60% increase from last year!
We served 126 homes with 232 residents, plus 1 nonprofit facility housing 18 residents. This is the most families we have ever helped in a single year and was a major increase from 75 houses in 2015.
We added two full-time staff members
Marty Clariday started as a part-time Project Manager for us in February 2016. We liked him so much we hired him full-time in April! His skilled background and willingness to go the extra mile is a great asset to our team. Marty joins Ed Kephart as our two full-time Project Managers. Katie Raines joined us in July as our Director of Development. Katie specializes in all things digital, keeping our Facebook page up-to-date and bringing our staff’s average age down a decade or two! 😉
We helped a veteran avoid homelessness
Our biggest project of 2016 was for a veteran in Liberty who was in serious risk of losing his home. Our Project Managers and over 50 volunteers saved this man from homelessness, and provided him functional plumbing, electrical and weatherproofing. We worked on everything from a broken dishwasher to installing a new heating and cooling system.
Survey showed 96.7% fewer falls after our modifications
Our Safe at Home services for seniors are in high demand. Our survey results gathered this year found that clients in 2015 fell 62 times before modifications and only 2 times after modifications in the areas we improved! What a spectacular outcome, revealing the effectiveness of these services!
We partnered with North Kansas City Hospital for an Aging-in-Place Demonstration
This year we were thrilled to be a part of a demonstration focused on reducing hospital readmissions for former NKC Hospital patients . We installed grab bars, railings, bathroom assistive devices, low-rise steps and more to help aging adults stay safe and healthy in the comfort of their homes. Here’s a great video featuring this program, and the work we did for Jim Taylor:
23 Homes were rehabbed in ONE DAY
Our annual Rebuilding Day was a success, with nearly 400 volunteers transforming the homes and lives of 23 families in the Northland! Churches, businesses and individuals installed new windows, trimmed trees, built new decks, painted exteriors and the list goes on!
The RT Store had a major expansion
This summer we expanded our RT Store, a thrift store for building materials, and made it open to the public in June! We are thrilled with the surplus of space and look forward to the ways this store will continue to support our programs.
Wells Fargo Partnership for Safe and Healthy Housing
In October we partnered with Wells Fargo to transform the lives of a disadvantaged family in KC North. The senior couple both experienced health challenges, and their house had deteriorated to the point where they were at risk of losing their homeowners insurance. Not only this, but the husband’s wheelchair tires were getting tangled up in the aging carpet. With the help of Wells Fargo and volunteers, we were able to create a safe and healthy home for this deserving family.
We had more help than we could ask for
In 2016, 648 Volunteers invested 8,572 hours and completed home repairs and modifications worth a market value of $259,956 for Northland residents. WOW! Thank you for your commitment to create a safe and healthy home for every person!
RT Store will be featured at the KC Remodel + Garden Show February 10-12 at the American Royal Center. Visit our booth to see our Upcycle Challenge, and purchase products designed out of items from our store! Click below for an additional $1 off your tickets when you buy online!
